NORTH STAFFS
Our usual news and events from Staffs below from Steve Gullick
And Lorna Davis
Good week again for music last week. The Spittalbrook was not too busy, but had some really good performers down – it's not an ideal venue but it is a long established club and some of Stafford's best ever folk nights have been down there, the Spittalbrook has something of a chequered career, being originally a Trad folk club that slowly morphed into an acoustic session club and now it looks like it is leaning towards trad and trad style folk again which may or may not be good news, depending on your point of view, but I think there will always be a warm welcome for all musicians and singers at the Spittalbrook.

The Rose and Crown is still going from strength to strength under its careful nurturing by Jeff and the Spring Chickens. Last week was particularly good with some new faces and a wonderfully eclectic range of music and styles.

The Crown at Hyde Lea is always a well-attended session with some of the counties finest musicians and singers, but last week was exceptional, even by the Crown standards. It is so difficult trying to make sure that everyone gets a fair hearing especially when all of the performers are first rate!! I do hope no one went home disappointed with their 'turn' but, speaking for me; I get more pleasure from listening to good quality music performed well than attempting to play it myself!

Next week is shaping up like this;

Monday – Four Crosses Cannock. Very nice relaxed, mainly song, session hosted by Helen Borton. Well worth a visit f you have not been before and if you have been before you will certainly be going again!

Tuesday – Spittalbrook Stafford. Regular weekly session starts about 8.30 and you need to be early to get a seat.

Wednesday – Rose & Crown Stafford – rapidly becoming a 'must go' for many Stafford acoustic musicians with a 'come all ye' policy that allows music of any genre a hearing and a great night guaranteed for all! If you play sing, yodel, fire-eat, break dance or whatever, you will be given a very warm welcome by Jeff and the Spring Chickens in what is a great venue with some of the best beer in Stafford and a resident poltergeist!

And here's one for your diary;

Dubravko Lapaine – the Croation-based didgeridoo virtuoso will be appearing at the Stafford Ale House on Sunday July 8th and will be supported by Fish from Oblivion – the amazing Stafford based world music choir – tickets are just £7.50 and can be had from the Ale House or by phoning George Davies on 01543 571910. This should really be a 'not to be missed' opportunity – he don't come here very often!

As Mentioned there the Olympic Torchm that fancy cigarette lighter thing given to far too many people to sell on E-Bay or unknown American's like Will-I-Am to boost viewing figures for The Voice, and which caused big traffic hold ups in dublin the other week when I was there. (hands up how many like me, thought it was just ONE torch passed on to each runner!?) Will be in the Black Country on Saturday June 30th ,it'll be in Wolverhampton at approx 2:30 and Dudley approx 4:15 where exactly I don't know, but might make an interesting day out. Enjoy.

And Finally I had an e.mail through with some info re a local boat/canal festival this coming week end I think. I'm afraid I've lost it, if you sent it or know about it perhaps you could re send it as it sounds a good event

And that's all for now, remember the Clarendon Acoustic music Club Singaround kicks off the week tonight, hope to see some of you there. En joy your Sunny (erm just clouded over) Day
