Subject: Folkie updates

Hi Everyone
Just the weekly update!
Tuesday has the regular Spittalbrook session - always a packed house with a wide variety of musical tastes on offer. Get there early if you want to sit down though, it can get a bit crowded!

Wednesday has the Pie and Ale sit 'n listen Club. This gets better and better each week, the quality of the music is quite amazing and admission is still FREE! If you fancy a floor spot please contact Garry on 01785 256202 or see him on the night. This club is rapidly becoming one of the favourite places to see, and most importantly, HEAR, local talent and is well worth a visit if you have not been before. Get there early to get one of the really comfy seats and don't forget to buy a raffle ticket!

Friday brings the fabulous Jez Lowe to the Unicorn Folk Club at the Bradford Arms. There are still some tickets left, so ring Vicky on 01952 81035 to reserve yours if you haven't already done so, why take a chance on some being available on the night? If you have not seen him before, I really think you should go and see him, this is one act that I would just not miss.
Cheers

Steve

ANNOUNCING TWO OUTSTANDING CONCERTS, THE FIRST BEING THIS COMING SATURDAY AT BICKERTON:

THE FRENCH CONNECTION, PART I – SAT JUNE 11th – RUNE

The French Connection film car chase was rated as the best ever, but the only scary chase in Cheshire will be to get your tickets in time for this best ever line up of French connected music.
RuneRUNE play Anglo French Irish music, a rich tapestry, beautifully woven and worked into a natural and harmonious mosaic of traditional music from each of the respective members traditions.

Rune includes Cheshire exile Chris Dawson on flute and bouzouki. Chris was known for his fine musicianship in his Cheshire heydays with 'Chew The Roots' and is looking forward to a return visit to Cheshire. Many top folk musicians play Chris's hand manufactured Rhiannon flute and don't forget to watch out for his circular breathing trick on the flute, enabling him to play notes non stop. Chris also plays with one of the top bands in France, Keltiac.

In the Rune line up is Cindy Pascher whose family is noted for its collection and preservation of French traditional music, and on fiddle the up and coming Camille Raibaud. Rune's world music percussionist Hopi Hopkins is unable to attend this concert.

Vocal Point
RUNE's guests are close harmony trio VOCAL POINT including John and Angie Owen of the Hungry Horse Folk Club and Wirral Folk on The Coast Festival and Sue Farley who was for many years part of the harmony group Allegro and was Director of Music for the Knowsley Singers.

You will love their gentle interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk songs along with their 'a capella' songs.

On Saturday June 11th at Bickerton Village Hall, Long Lane, Bickerton, SY14 8AU.
Tickets £10, campervans and caravans £5

AND THE SECOND OUTSTANDING CONCERT, AT MIDDLEWICH:

THE FRENCH CONNECTION, PART II – FRI JULY 1ST

PIERRE BENSUSAN

supported by: Nigel Beck

Pierre was voted "Best World Music Guitar Player in 2008" readers' choice by Guitar Player Magazine.
French-Algerian guitarist singer and composer Pierre Bensusan will be very ably supported by virtuoso guitarist NIGEL BECK.
If "World Music" is music that pays tribute to the spirit of a collection of human beings through distinct rhythms traditional instruments and harmonic colours Pierre Bensusan can be recognized as one of the most eloquent and diverse world musicians of our time.
Born in Oran French-Algeria 1957 when France was decolonizing its Empire Pierre Bensusan's family moved to Paris when he was 4. He began formal studies on piano at the age of 7 and at 11 taught himself guitar. Influenced in those early days by the folk revival blooming in Britain, France and North America, Bensusan began first to explore his own diverse musical heritage and then moved to the horizons beyond. At 17 he signed his first recording contract and one year later his first album Pres de Paris won the Grand Prix du Disque upon his debut at the Montreux Festival in Switzerland. Described by the L.A. Times as "one of the most unique and brilliant acoustic guitar veterans in the world music scene today".
He is a composer as well as a bilingual and a brave improvisational vocalist melding whistles and resonant low notes with something like his own scat technique.
There is a sense of something both playful and serious in his work and an unparalleled sense of freedom in his compositions and his improvisations. His "manner" of playing defies classification – crossing world classical jazz traditional folk and more, sharing and fusing cultures together in ways we have never experienced.
A unique experience for Middlewich – not to be missed !

NIGEL BECK

Nigel Beck"Hi, I'm Nigel Beck. A Leicestershire based 6 & 12 string fingerstyle acoustic guitar player. My main influences are Leo Kottke, Pierre Bensusan, Antonio Forcione and Eric Roche.
I love the propulsive flowing nature of Leo Kottke's playing and Pierre Bensusan's beautifully crafted music with its classical/jazz/celtic feel are a delight. Antonio Forcione and Eric Roche also inspire me with their imagination and flair for composition and style.
The music of Ralph Towner has also shaped and moulded my playing and writing with his deeply classical approach and performance style. These are but a few of the many players I admire and learn from."
