A picture speaks a thousand words

Especially if accompanied by some great music! We think the latest montage of pictures on the Towersey homepage captures what it feels like to be at our wonderful Festival more than anything we could say! The great music comes courtesy of Anna Elias & the Forlorn Hope who played with us in 2010.

Take a look and pass it on.....Towersey is where "Festival" means so much more...

It's Craft Times at Towersey

You may not think you know Craft Times but if you have been to Towersey recently then you probably do. They have been contributing to the uniqueness of our Childrens Festival since 2005, where last year they introduced the 'Power Station', an interactive art project. This dark, ugly, polluting sculpture was transformed with the help of young Festival goers into a thriving greenhouse; investigating the theme of 'Energy from Food'. 2011 will see the return of the 'ugly duckling' Power Station in its enhanced polluting form with added unpleasant smells and smoke! The theme this year 'Energy Efficiency' will see the sculpture transformed into an 'Energy Efficient Home', incorporating solar panels, solar water heater, wind turbine, insulation and energy efficient appliances.

The other place you may have bumped into Craft Times work was on the Showground in the form of the rather beautiful but mysterious Spinning Wooden Sculpture (known as the HiG) This Wind Sculpture will return in a slightly refined form, with the added benefit of harnessing the power of the wind and generating the electricity it requires to power its own lighting.

This year also look out for Treelix, conical topiary tree style wind spinning sculptures and for those who like to "try for yourself" there will be opportunities to make your own Helix with designer and maker Mark Clarke.

A Craft Fair like no other

Towersey Craft Fair is like no other. It's where (would you believe), you start thinking about Christmas presents. Here is just one of the many unique stalls joining us in 2011......Nan's Old Buttons.

There will be around 35 stalls and 5 days to browse. If you want to trade in the craft fair or our huge International Market then take a look here...

Making Your International Connections

Over 80 artists across 8 stages over 4 days are what you can expect at Towersey. And they join us from all over the UK and indeed the world! To whet the appetite here are just a few of our International connections.

The Burns Unit represent a coming together of eclectic musical styles that really does work! It features indie queen Emma Pollock; Indo Caledonian pop artist Future Pilot AKA; award winning folk singer Karine Polwart; alt folk royalty King Creosote; elegant multi instrumentalist Kim Edgar; drummer/producer Mattie Foulds and energetic piano man Michael Johnston (both from Canada), along with virtuosic rapper MC Soom T. In August 2010, The Burns Unit released their debut album, "Side Show". Produced by the band's drummer Mattie Foulds, mixed with Paul Savage (Franz Ferdinand) and mastered by Jon Astley (Tears For Fears, The Who, Norah Jones).

"Cara Dillon is one of Ireland's truly great singers." THE GUARDIAN ****
Cara Dillon has one of those rare talents you only come across a handful times in your whole life. Her staggeringly beautiful voice has the ability to reach inside the soul of a song and imbue material with not only profound sweetness but also poignancy and depth.

Hear that voice...

Flying in from Germany, the history of 17 Hippies reads as a chronicle of the Berlin music scene. From Krautrock to Punk, and Jazz to Classical Music … you can tell just by listening that they've been around and their big band sound really does have to be seen to be believed. Having played over 1500 gigs around the world we are thrilled to welcome them to Towersey.

Check out 17 Hippies in action...

Wave goodbye to choirs as you know them and say hello to The Spooky Men's Chorale. This one is a macho juggernaut - zany, black-clad, big as a behemoth and show-stoppingly good, sounding as sacred as a high church choir one minute; wickedly off the wall the next. Hailing from New South Wales in Australia they are compellingly comic but make no mistake, this is a class act. Pitch perfect harmonies, theatrical delivery, savvy lyrics, imaginations that run riot and men who really can multi-task!

Festivals....the Real Social Network

book now...

Social Networking is everywhere; many of us live our lives on our smart phones, laptops and tablets, spending hours on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, blogs and through countless discussion boards and emails. Is this truly a social experience? What if you could meet all your friends, make new ones, blog (or chat), post in real time by shouting across the crowd and immerse yourself in culture. Well, festivals provide just that platform (to use a technical term!).

So this summer give your iPod a break and let your memory download the music for a change. Towersey "gets into your bloodstream and won't let go". Escape real life for a few days on a Festival site where you can truly socialise.

Thanks to support from Performing Right Foundation we can announce Broken Click-Track. A collective centred around three of the most innovative figures in the Scottish modern trad scene. Martin Green (Lau, Accordion and Electronics), Fraser Fifield (Scots Trad. Composer of the Year, Whistles and Sax) and Inge Thomson (Karine Polwart Band, Vocals, Electronics and Accordion) join forces with Brighton based producer Tom Cook (Electronics and Guitar) and arguably London's hippest drummer, John Blease at the kit.

As well as the festival Favourite (and Patron) Roy Bailey's annual Monday afternoon Concert (always a packed house!) Roy and David Ferrard will present an evening of Singing Through The Hard Times. Songs to help you through the credit crunch and government cuts! Songs which arose during and reflect tough social and economic times: ballads, the Depression era, Carter Family & Seeger songs. Uplifting; an antidote to these hard times!

"Hereafter" an introduction to some of the up and coming singer/songwriters plying their trade on the London scene including Fiona Bevan, Holly Walker and Laura J Martin. Catch them in The Hive on Sunday night.

Literary Happening - these seemingly spontaneous happenings are actually two ex-Royal Shakespeare Company Actors delivering Festival themed readings in some odd locations. Keep a look out!
