CD & Reviews  MAY  / JUNE 2011

The reviews of any CDs are only meant as a guide.

Stan Rogers, CD * The Very Best of Stan Rogers * (Borealis Records, 2011)

Stan Rogers passed away in 1983, but his music and songs lives on. He was a brilliant singer and inspiration to many that followed; in fact you might say he was a legend in his own time. Born of sea-faring folks in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, he was a big man 6foot 4 with a rich dark brown big voice. Having composed about 60 songs, many of which have become 'standards' amongst singers of today his legacy lives on. I can't remember when it was that I first became aware of Stan Rogers, but it was back in the days before CD's and his work was on vinyl LP's.

So it is only fitting that some of his best songs should be re-mastered on to CD. Paul Mills and Ariel Rogers who also made the final song selection produce this CD. There are 16 tracks, Joao Carvahlo by Carvahlo mastering in Toronto has carefully mastered all. All the songs have been taken from previous albums dating from 1976 to 1983. A sign that quality of such is that many of them have been covered by other artists many times. I know that firm favourites amongst British fans are 'Barrett's Privateers', 'Tiny Fish for Japan', 'North West Passage', 'The Jeannie C', 'The Field Behind the Plough' to name but a few. Plus my own particular favourite 'The Mary Ellen Carter'. This track was recorded live at the Groaning Board, Toronto in 1979, - as are several of the other songs.

To sum up, I suspect most of you will already have some of these recordings in your collection. But if you are new to folk music, - you are in for a rare treat. This is a super album and I would urge you to buy it you won't regret it. You can buy the album on line here: http://www.systemrecords.co.uk/rogers-stan-very-best-p-1057702.html  (best price I found for the U.K.)  The album due for release on 25th April 2011.

I rate this one * * * * * * * * May 2011

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jeana Leslie & Siobhan Miller,  CD * Shadows Tall *.

This is the 2nd album from Jeana Leslie & Siobhan Miller. The duo met whilst studying at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama. They both graduated in 2009 with Honour's. Indeed they are 2 Scottish lassies that should know their business as they have been hailed as 2 rising stars on the Scottish music scene.

Jeana Leslie:  fiddle, Hardanger fiddle, piano, & vocals, comes from Orkney and was a semi-finalist in the Scottish Young Traditional Musician of the Year Award in 2004 and 2005. Siobhan Miller: piano & vocals, is from Penicuik just to the south of Edinburgh. She first appeared at the Traditional Song and Music Association of Scotland's Auchtermuchty Festival when only 13 years old and won both the children's and women's singing competitions there. With pedigrees like this, you know it's the real thing when they sing with strong Scottish accents. They both sing very well with voices that blend and harmonize sweetly.

There are 11 tracks on the album, and all but 2 are traditional material. The other two are 'Who will sing me lullabies?' by Kate Rusby and the Richard Thompson song 'The Great Valerio'. The traditional songs include many you may have heard before such as 'Johnie O'Braidisley', 'Trooper and the Maid' and 'Buttermilk Hill' - all done very nicely with good arrangements, so should satisfy even the most ardent of Traditional Scottish music fans.

The album comes with a nice booklet containing all the lyrics. This is a must for we 'Sassenachs' who struggle a bit with the heavy Scottish dialects.

My only tiny criticism of the album is the slightly over use of reverb on the vocals. This made it a little hard to catch the words, with the Scottish   dialect. This is so important with traditional songs. On the girls website there are several video's of them performing at various festivals. The quality of the audio on these is quite good with little or no reverb, and so the girls sound much better. However, if this is my only negative comment about the album, so that can't be a bad thing.

You can buy the album on line here: http://www.jeanaleslie-siobhanmiller.co.uk/music/ and learn more about the duo. I rate this album * * * * * * May 2011

Dalla,  CD * Cribbar *,

Dalla are a 4 piece dance band specialising in Cornish 'Celtic' dance music. They are based in Redruth, Cornwall. If you are dancer who enjoys the odd schottishe, furry, kabm pymp, etc, you'll know what you are doing more than me! To be fair the album is recorded very well and I could not fault the musicianship. There are 12 tracks on the album out of which 5 are songs. One of which is sung in Cornish Gaelic (I think!) its called 'Tolla Rooz' and adapted from a poem written in 1710 by John Bosun. It is pre-empted by a Cornish version of the song Barbara Allan called 'Ann Tremellan'. Both are sung well by Hillary Coleman & Bec Applebee. The other song on the album is an interesting version of 'Maggie May' – completely different from the song usually associated with this title both in folk song or pop music! This one was written in America in 1869, brought back to this country by sailors, I imagine who docked in Bristol.

One track that stands out giving the album some theatre and entertainment value is 'Mary's Waltz' a strange title, for it is narrated by Bec Applebee in a Cornish accent against a musical background. Very affective. It tells the tale of Mary Bryant and how she was transported to Australia in the 1780's for stealing a bonnet. It is taken from Bec Applebee one-woman show called 'Oh Mary'.

The band is Hilary Coleman: clarinet, bass clarinet, Indian harmonium, & vocals. Neil Davey: bouzouki, fiddle, mandolin, huer's horn & vocals. Bec Apllebee: crowdy crawn, darabuka, scoots, mung beans, bells, & vocals. Steve Hunt: guitar, crowdy crawn (Cornish bodhran) & vocals. Guest musicians on this album are Jen Dyer: viola. Kyt Le Nen- Davey: accordion. Will Coleman: gaita bagpipes. The Perraners choir. Tom Tremewan: spoke Cornish. Gareth Young: seagulls, Gareth also recorded, mixed and mastered the album.

I enjoyed the album, although personally, I wasn't over keen on sound of the clarinet on some of the tunes, - it not normally an instrument that is associated with traditional music, - but it grows on you.

You can buy the album online here: http://www.musicofcornwall.co.uk/ or visit the bands website here: http://www.dalla.co.uk/index.php to learn more about Dalla. I rated this album * * * * * *   27th May 2011

FOLK HUMOUR…

If you've got a good joke email me at  petetheshoe@gmail.com

Two fish in a tank.

One says to the other "Can you drive this thing?"

Why didn't the U.S. Govt. think of this?
A friend just started his own business in Afghanistan.

He's making land mines that look like prayer mats.

It's doing well.

He says prophets are going through the roof.

From Brian Lupton
