CD & Reviews  JAN / FEB 2011

The reviews of any CDs are only meant as a guide.

Lynne Heraud & Pat Turner,  CD * Tickled Pink *,

This is Lynne and Pats 4th Album. On it they demonstrate that they are two ladies who are game for a laugh and have lost none of their panache for confronting, head-on, the experiences that life can bring and perform them in a spectrum of musical entertainment. They both sing well and sound quite good singing in harmony unaccompanied. If I were to say, "This is a girlie album" or "One for the girls" my wife would probably start preparing the poisoned mushrooms! Experience has taught me saying a thing like this is much riskier than French kissing Piranha fish.

However, with emotive songs like 'Oxfam Girls' a song that takes the rip out of ladies, (several of some I know) who take delight in rooting out charity shops in other towns. 'Distant Rumblings' a song about ladies with un-controllable flatulence! 'The Smear Test'- you don't get many songs about the cervical cancer test that women have to undergo. Even 'In Praise of the Menopause' (what's that?) a song that leaves nothing to the imagination, as does 'IMIMB' – stands for "I must Improve my bust" I think you will understand. Lynne and Pat write all of these, and I have to say they are dam good. It's worth buying the album for these alone!

I am waiting now for a song about men who have had a vasectomy!

It's not all comedy though, indeed the album starts with Child ballad number 20, 'Bonny George Campbell' (traditional) and has a good selection of other traditional songs such as 'Green Grow the Laurel', Rosemary Lane' and 'Wife of Usher's Well' to name a few. Worthy of an extra mention, Pat Turner pens one of best songs on the album. It's called 'Back in the Game' it has a nice tune and good lyrics.  It's a love song that, strangely, reminded me of a song by Buddy Holly, 'Learning the Game'.

Overall I liked the album very much, and consider it well worth having in any body's collection, be you a traditional, or contemporary fan.  They have a website and you can buy the album online here: http://www.lynneandpat.co.uk/albums.htm

I rated this album * * * * * *

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tim Laycock,  CD * Sea Strands *,

This album is subtitled 'Folk Songs and Tunes from Dorset' and for the most part it contains just that. It is nice to hear Tim on a solo album, as he is often associated with the 'New Scorpion Band'. Tim sings well in a Dorset accent, which in a way adds some charm to the songs, accompanying himself on the concertina or melodeon.  This can be a bit limiting, so he has enlisted some guest musicians. Robin Jeffrey: guitar, mandolin, laouto, and percussion. Colin Thompson: fiddle and viola. Gabriel Laycock: 12 string guitar, to fill out the tracks.  I think this album will be well received by the traditionalist's amongst our readers, those who enjoy traditional songs, and tunes, performed as they might be in an average small folk club or sing-a-round, without the use a P.A system.

The play-list contains many songs you will be well familiar with such as 'The Bold Grandee', 'Husbandman and Servantman', 'Write Me Down', and 'John Barleycorn' to name but a few. The songs are enhanced with a couple of dance tunes 'Rickaty Robin / Tipsy Bob' and 'A Glimse of a Green Land' traditional and written in Dorset.

A couple of song worth an extra mention, only because I can not remember hearing them before, are 'The Bwoat' a Dorset poem by William Barnes set to music by Tim. The other is 'Death in the Nut' this is a story Tim has set to music. It's a brave attempt, but at over 8mins long it loses impact and, dare I say it, gets boring! (Sorry Tim).

Please don't think this album is poor, far from it, it really is quite good and worth having in your collection. You can learn more about Tim Laycock on his website here: http://www.timlaycock.co.uk/index.html

However, at the time of writing there is no reference to this particular album. If you want to buy it on line, you will have to go to the Wild Goose website here: http://www.wildgoose.co.uk/displayAlbum.asp?PRODUCT_ID=184

Enjoy. I rate this album * * * * *

Subject: WORLD SURVEY BY PHONE

Last month a world-wide telephone survey was conducted by the UN.

The only question asked was:
"Could you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?"

The survey was a massive failure because of the following:
1. In Eastern Europe they didn't know what "honest" meant.
2. In Western Europe they didn't know what "shortage" meant.
3. In Africa they didn't know what "food" meant.
4. In China they didn't know what "opinion" meant.
5. In the Middle East they didn't know what "solution" meant.
6. In South America they didn't know what "please" meant.
7. In the USA they didn't know what "the rest of the world" meant.
8. In the UK they hung up as soon as they heard the Indian accent.
