.....Julie Matthews, Rory McLeod, Ruth Notman, Boo Hewerdine, Jez Lowe, Kate Bramley and Radio 4 regulars, poets Kate Fox and Elvis McGonagall. One of the biggest shows (if not the biggest) we have put on comes our way as part of a short 3-date tour tomorrow (Sat Sept 24). Originally commissioned by the Brampton Folk festival in 2010 the project saw the participants holed up in a farmhouse for a week with a brief to compose a broad range of songs, interspersed with spoken-word pieces that charts the progress of Hadrian's Wall from East to West. The subsequent concert was recorded for cd but unfortunateley the festival was cancelled as was another in Gateshead. The piece made an appearance at Celtic Connections in January and it is with great anticipation that it makes it's way south. As with similar projects (Darwin and Cecil Sharp) the work soon takes on wider significance with, as Jez Lowe explains ''subjects as diverse as foot and mouth disease, the Berlin Wall, the Tyneside Metro system, the Border Reivers, nineteenth-century witchcraft, doomed love affairs....and a good number of Romans in the gloamin all making it into our words and poems.'' Both Julie and Boo told me that it had been one of the most enjoyable experiences of their musical careers. So I do hope you can join us as I dare say the opportunity will not come around again.
