Old Blind Dogs, *Wherever Yet May Be* (Compass Records, 2010) When I was a wee lad I was always made to eat my vegetables at dinnertime. So, I developed a habit of eating the things I disliked most on my dinner plate first, - so as to leave the best till last. Strange how later on in life I really got like the taste of the vegetables I thought I hated! There must be a name for this syndrome? What has this got to do with Old Blind Dogs, well nothing really except that it came to my notice, that every time the boss man mails me some CD's for review, I would always write about the worst ones in the pile first, leaving the best till last for a treat. And what a treat! Old Blind Dogs have for a long time been one of my favourite bands. They found a niche in the market and stayed with it. This album is no exception. I am sure all their fans will enjoy it as they continue to fuse Celtic Scottish traditional and contemporary music and songs into an almost folk rock style. However, I did wonder the first time I put the album on. As it starts with a slow moody air 'St Kilda' but this just sets a back cloth for 2nd track 'Lough Erne's Shore' an Irish song. From there on it visits music and songs from both sides of the Atlantic, but still served up in true inimitable Blind Dogs style. The album takes its title from a line in the chorus of 'Scotland Yet' a great song by the late Davy Steele. The band on this album is Ali Hutton: pipes, whistles, and acoustic guitar. Aaron Jones: bouzouki, guitar and lead vocals. Jonny Hardie: fiddle, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and lead vocals. Fraser Stone: drums, percussion and vocals. Guest musicians are Rick Taylor: trombone and backing vocals. Nigel Hitchcock: soprano and tenor saxophones. Nathon Jones: resonator guitar. Angus Lyon: Fender Rhodes. The album is nicely presented in a cardboard sleeve with professional themed photos, complete with a song notes booklet. To sum up -really nice album, of a standard of which we have come to expect from the band. Buy it and enjoy. You can buy it online here: http://www.musicinscotland.com/acatalog/Old_Blind_Dogs_Wherever_Yet_May_Be_CD.html The Old Blind Dogs website is here: http://www.oldblinddogs.co.uk/index.asp I rated this album * * * * * * * 28/6/11 Kevin Burke & Cal Scott, * Suite *, (Loftus Music, 2010) This is the 2nd album from Kevin Burke & Cal Scott. Its interesting the collaboration between two composers, Kevin from a background steeped in Irish music. Best known as the fiddle player in Bothy Band Patrick Street Open House & Celtic Fiddle Festival bands. Cal from a background of composing music for film and TV, and perhaps best known as member of the Trail Band. Both are superb musicians with a real flair. There are 9 tracks on the album. In affect it is in 3 parts. The first 3 tracks feature Kevin on fiddle and Cal on guitar playing 3 sets of jigs, reels and a waltz. Some of which are composed by Kevin and Cal are tastefully mixed with some traditional reels. Tracks 4 to 7 are subtitled 'The Irish Session Suite'. These are 10 traditional tunes arranged in four movements for String Quartet. Kevin: on violin with guest musicians Andrew Ehrlich: violin. Charles Noble: viola. Justin Kagan: cello. At track 8 Cal Scott returns on guitar accompanying Kevin on two hornpipes composed by Cal. The final track is as set of three traditional tunes 'Dan O'Keefe's / I had a Wife / Leave Well Alone ' To sum up, this is a well thought out album with plenty of variation that keeps you entertained. Of course you have to admire the pure artistry of Kevin and Cal. I particularly enjoyed the tempo at which the tunes were played. You can hear every note, and it doesn't sound like they are 'showing off'. A good pleasant album everyone will enjoy, especially if you are an up and coming fiddle player, - this one is must have. You can learn more about Kevin Burke & Cal Scott on their websites here: http://www.kevinburke.com/html_home.html and http://www.calscottmusic.com/Portfolio/Home.html Also buy the album on line here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/burkescott2 I rated this album * * * * * * 28/6/11 Mustard's Retreat, * Living in the Dream *, (Yellow Room Records, 2011) About this album, I could just write 'Wow' another good, well thought out album from Mustard's Retreat, but that would be a bit twee! David Tamulevich and Michael Hough the duo who make up Mustard's Retreat have been around for a few years now about 42years! In fact they now have 13 Albums to their credit. Judging by the photos in the cover notes, they may be a lot older, greyer, and leaner than pictures on previous albums but they are still hungry enough to produce brilliant entertaining albums. As singer-songwriters this gets harder year-by-year, as often you can see, a lot of singer-songwriters are way past their best. Not so the case with Mustards Retreat. The material on this album proves that Michael and David can still 'cut the mustard' when it comes to writing some good songs. There are 14 songs on the album and all but 6 are written by the duo. Two of these are traditional 'Adieu Sweet Lovely Nancy' from the Copper family collection and 'Blow the Candle Out' traditional but with some new lyrics and chorus added by Michael Hough. The others are 'Let the Mystery Be', Iris DeMent fabulous song and a couple I haven't heard before 'Waiting for the Hatch to Rise' by Jim Smith. Adding some variation to the album, there is also some poetry 'My Candle Burns' and 'Wynken, Blynken & Nod' set to a musical background by Michael. Also a set of tunes 'Grace/Cotter Creek/Bobs Moving Day' to complete the variation. David's songs all seem to centre on love nothing wrong with that. My favourite track, and deserves an extra mention is 'The First Flower' with words guaranteed to touch your heart. As I said before, another great album from Mustard's Retreat and one I am sure fans of the band will enjoy. You can buy it online here: http://www.mustardsretreat.com/music.html I rated this album * * * * * * * 28/6/11 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Green Man Review Online magazine that reviews folk, roots, and acoustic music and literature.
