Hornpipe Happening at the Glebe(Phase2)

Dear People who came to the Hornpipe Happening, or perhaps wished they had, or would like to come to the next one

Jan 4 at the Glebe was great, 31 people turned up and played the Stoke Hornpipe at 10PM, and a good time was had by all. We had young fiddlers and greyhaired dobro players, and everyone in between.  Next Tuesday, Feb 1, let's do it all again, but with a difference. With ANOTHER TUNE. To show we aren't parochial in Stoke, we are going to play the Hanley Hornpipe as well as  the Stoke Hornpipe
If you don't know the tunes, here is  a rough recording, kindly made  by Julia Finch on her trusty mobile phone at a sing song in the Penkhull Greyhound. (You may know her as a melodeon player, but you perhaps didn't know what a dab-hand she is at Youtube technology)

The Stoke and Hanley Hornpipes
Have a listen, have a go.
Also, if it's helpful, the sheet music of both tunes is attached to this email.

The Boat Band will be playing from 9PM, and anyone else is especially welcome to contribute a tune or a song to the proceedings, at any time as the spirit or the Joules moves you. The Glebe is a brilliant pub, with a fire (the weather is getting colder again).

Useful information: the Glebe is on Glebe St in Stoke, next to the King's Hall/Civic Centre Council complex. For Satnav users, the post code is ST4 1HG. They do excellent food, which I think is available in the pre-gig period. I saw someone tucking into to a bowl of lobby(stew) and  some decent looking bread  before a previous gig. They have a good range of cheese and chutney I'm told.
Tel: 01782 860 670 if you want to check food availability.
WARNING if you are unfamiliar with the Stoke one-way system, you will be in a panic as you arrive at the  King's Hall car park (very near to the pub). And being in a panic,, you will miss the badly placed notice which you can't read as you drive into the carpark, so be warned. They do charge in the evenings, only £1. But loads of people got a ticket at the last gig!
The January 4 night at the Glebe
Here is Glyn Chapman's video of us all in action
Pretty clever of  Glyn actually, as he was playing mandoline as well.

And here are some of Tony Jones' lovely black and white pix of the event.

The Stoke Hornpipe START project is supported by SHOP, the base for arts events in a vacant shop in the town of Stoke, for more info click on

Calling all video and photography and dance music people. We have an excellent recording of the Hanley Hornpipe, made by Tony Weatherall and Neil Brookes. Why not put a slide show or video of Hanley images to go with it. Or film or record the proceedings on the night and do something interesting with the images or the music. Rip it apart! These tunes are 200 years old. Let's dust them off, give them a bit of a polish, add a squirt of WD40 and push them forward into their next 200 years of adventure.

Regards
Greg and the Boat Band

PS (Info for non-Clayheads) Stoke is a town. In the city of Stoke-on-Trent. The city centre of Stoke-on-Trent is called Hanley. This confuses people from outside. Sorry, but that's the way it is.

PPS No, hornpipes aren't necessarily anything to do with the sea. The Last Night at the Proms may have confused you.

PPPS Have still not found out the identity of the woman with the low D whistle in a bag on her back, or the man called James who sang a blues with a guitar. We want them back! Can anybody help?
